Life Lessons from Naira Marley

Just the other day, my good friend brought up something she learned from her new Yoruba teacher. I immediately asked who this teacher was, and she told me it was Naira Marley. My friend is American, and was excited about learning Yoruba language by listening to Naira Marley songs. Given the subject matter of most of his songs, I was a bit concerned about what she might be learning from these lessons. However, it caused me to think about what I might be able to learn from him too.

For those of you who might not be familiar with Naira Marley, he is a famous and controversial Nigerian musician. He has ties to the UK and to Nigeria. Over the last years, he has risen to fame with many popular songs. However, his song lyrics are not always something a person would like to repeat in polite conversation! He has famously sung about prison life, drugs, and other explicit topics.

Given his reputation, you may be surprised I’m choosing to write about him. However, I believe life lessons can come from anywhere, and I’d like to share some things I’ve learned from Naira Marley.
