Life Lessons from a Creature of Habits

My Usual Lunch

Just the other day, I needed to schedule a meeting with a friend and colleague. We spoke on the phone and she asked where we should meet. I suggested we go to my usual place where I have dinner most nights. We met at the restaurant, and the waitress came and greeted me. I ordered my usual drink alongside my usual dinner order. As the food arrived, I realized that all of these decisions came from my habits.

You see, I am truly a creature of habit! Every Monday, I have a long-standing meeting. Every weeknight, you can expect to find me eating the same meal. Every weekend, you can find me in the same venue. Some of you have even noticed that every trip I take, I pack the same type shirt, which has been shown in photographs in a few different life lessons.

I realized that I may have a few life lessons from these habits, which I’d like to share with you.

Habits can reduce your mental load

One reason I like to keep habits is because they make my life simpler. When my friend called me the other day to set a meeting place, I didn’t have to think long to come up with a spot — I went to my default. When I need to pack for a trip, I don’t need to spend a lot of time thinking about what to pack — I already know which clothes work for me when I travel, and I pack those.
