Just the other day, as I washed my hands in the office rest room, a sign on the door stared me in the face. Inscribed on the sign in bold letters: ‘LEAVE IT BETTER THAN YOU MET IT’. Conscious of the message, I quickly scanned and assessed the status of the cubicle, and wiped the excess water from the sink with the aim of ensuring that I left the place in a better state than I met it.

There is a life lesson from that session in the restroom, and I would like to share with you how I have applied this life lesson across my professional and personal life.

Assess the situation: With every opportunity that comes your way, the first thing to do is quickly assess the situation you’re working with. Just like I scanned the cubicle, to quickly review the current standards or expectations. This step is critical to informing the next steps.

Set a target

With the information from the first step, it’s important to set a target worth achieving. I find that we are often guilty of simply killing time in positions and opportunities we occupy because we fail to set and work towards any ambitious goals. Our targets should be developed with an aim to leave a lasting legacy.

Identify quick wins

It is okay to have a grand, elaborate, and comprehensive goal for achieving a lasting legacy…
